Learn to Love Anything

We have taught ourselves to view our perceptions as facts that are out of our control. “I don’t like snow” is not a fact. “I don’t like asparagus” is not a fact. The only fact is I haven’t yet learned how to enjoy snow. I haven’t yet learned how to enjoy asparagus. If I can find one person in this world who enjoys snow and find out what they tell themselves about snow, then I can model their thoughts and actions regarding snow, and I too can become a snow lover. If I can find someone who likes asparagus and model the way they prepare it and the things they tell themselves about the taste and texture of asparagus, then I can tell myself the same things, act the same way they do toward asparagus, and learn to love asparagus. Isn’t that lying to yourself? Absolutely not if you believe that everything in our world is to be enjoyed and percieved as good. The lying to ourselves happened a long time ago when we decided we hated this or hated that. Many of us go further and tell ourselves stories about all the suffering that is caused by the hated thing. This magnifies the woe associated with the thing. A whole big ugly picture is painted in the mind. I suggest repainting these pictures. We have the power to make decisions and learn to love anything in our experience. We can learn to love our jobs, our families, our homes, our churches, our communities, and even people who have previously been pains-in-our-rears. Think of something or someone that you want to learn to love today, find someone who has mastered the art of loving in that area, find out what they do to create that reality, and then do the same. |
